Vilafonté winery was established in 1997 in the Simonsberg Mountains, a majestic appellation in the centre of the Cape Winelands. It is a joint venture between South African and Californian wine-makers, with the sole goal of creating great, long-lasting wines.
The names “Vilafonté” and “Seriously Old Dirt” are both derived from vilafontés, an ancient soil type that forms the foundation of the winery’s pristine vineyards. It is the oldest documented soil type on the planet and gives these vines a level of prestige that many wine-makers can only aspire for. Bordeaux varietals thrive in this soil and form the basis of this beautiful red blend.
A rich ruby red, this wine exhibits a deep medley of fruity aromas supported by hints of pepper, fresh acidity and subtle spices. Composed mostly of Cabernet Sauvignon, with portions of Merlot and Malbec, “Seriously Old Dirt” brings a smooth mouthfeel and youthful, precise tannins. On the palate, you will discover sumptuous fruity flavours of plum, blueberry and red cherry, with savoury hints of dried herb, tobacco and baking spice. Consider pairing it with some tender, herby meats, such as lamb with rosemary and thyme or a red-wine-based pasta dish.
