    Chileense wijnen

    Wijn werd in Chili geïntroduceerd door Spaanse kolonisten in de jaren 1500. De meeste Chileense wijnen werden in het land geconsumeerd tot de jaren negentig, toen de export toenam en wijnliefhebbers over de hele wereld hun hoge kwaliteit en prijs-kwaliteitverhouding ontdekten. Dankzij het droge, warme klimaat van Chili hebben Chileense wijnmakers enthousiast gekozen voor biologische, biodynamische en duurzame wijnbouw. Naar schatting wordt 75% van de geëxporteerde Chileense wijnen duurzaam geproduceerd.

    De belangrijkste Chileense wijngebieden

    Chili is een smalle strook land langs de Andes die een enorme verscheidenheid aan klimaten en wijnstijlen biedt. De belangrijkste wijngebieden van Chili liggen grotendeels in de centrale vallei, in de buurt van de hoofdstad Santiago. Hiertoe behoren de Maipo Vallei, bijgenaamd de "Bordeaux van Chili", waar enkele van Chili's beroemdste wijnen worden geproduceerd, en de Aconcagua en Colchagua valleien, bekend om hun krachtige Cabernet Sauvignon en Carmenere wijnen. De koelere valleien van Casablanca en Limari staan beter bekend om hun elegante witte wijnen.

    Chileense druivenrassen

    Net als in buurland Argentinië worden de meeste Chileense wijnen gemaakt van klassieke Franse en Italiaanse druivenrassen die door Europese kolonisten zijn meegebracht. Chili's signatuurdruif en een van de beste Chileense wijnen is carmenere, die in Bordeaux verdween na de uitbraak van de druifluisziekte. De plaatselijke bevolking combineert deze heldere, fruitige rode wijn meestal met gebarbecued Patagonisch lamsvlees. Cabernet Sauvignon en Merlot zijn twee andere belangrijke rassen voor Chileense rode wijnen, evenals Chardonnay en Sauvignon Blanc voor witte wijnen.
