De kleurrijke geschiedenis van Far Niente begon in 1885, toen het landgoed werd gesticht door goudzoeker John Benson. Benson huurde architect Hamden McIntyre in om zijn dromen te verwezenlijken over de bouw van de grote stenen wijnmakerij waaraan hij de suggestieve Italiaanse naam gaf die "zonder zorg" betekent. Tegenwoordig wordt Far Niente beschouwd als een referentieproducent van Napa Chardonnay. Het fruit voor deze botteling komt uit de koele Coombsville regio ten oosten van de stad Napa.
