    In de jaren 2000 verwierf het legendarische Chateau Cos d'Estournel enkele eersteklas wijngaarden in de noordelijke Medoc op glooiende heuvels tegenover de Gironde. Goulee was ooit een eiland in de Gironde, en de bodem bestaat dan ook uit diepe lagen goed doorlatend grind. De wijngaarden van Goulee worden precies hetzelfde behandeld als de wijnstokken op het landgoed Cos, met zorgvuldige aandacht voor detail en arbeidsintensieve methoden zoals het uitdunnen van het gewas. De druiven worden met de hand geoogst en gevinifieerd door het Cos d'Estournel team volgens de strenge normen van het domein.

    La Goulee bestaat voornamelijk uit ongeveer 70-80% Merlot samen met 10-20% Cabernet Sauvignon en een drupje Cabernet Franc. De jonge wijn rijpt 12 maanden in Franse eikenhouten vaten voordat hij wordt vrijgegeven. Het resultaat is een krachtige en robuuste moderne Bordeaux die nu kan worden gedronken naast stevig rood vlees en vegetarische gerechten of die nog tien jaar of langer kan worden bewaard.

    Op de neus zijn er prikkelende tonen van cassis, moerbei en zure zwarte kersen, terwijl de eerste slok stevige tannines, een goed gebouwde structuur en hints van kruiden uit een sigarenkistje, grafiet, leer en geplette wilde bessen onthult.
