Famed Napa Valley winemaker Paul Hobbs first visited the Mendoza wine region in the late 1980s, driving over the Andes Mountains with his good friend, Jorge Catena, who also happens to be the brother of Argentina’s most famous winemaker, Nicolas Catena. Hobbs fell in love with the stunning high altitude region and soon teamed up with two Argentinian business partners, Andrea Marchiori and Luis Barraud, to found Vina Cobos.

Marchiori’s family have owned vineyards in Lujan de Cuyo for decades, so the estate’s finest wines are made from old vines which give intensely concentrated fruit with perfect balance thanks to the high altitude conditions. This stunning Cabernet grows at around 1000 metres above sea level in almost desert-like conditions. Following the harvest the grapes are vinified in stainless steel tanks and the young wine is then aged in American and French oak for 18 months before bottling.

The result is a big, bold Cabernet with ample cassis, blackberry and dark plum notes as well as hints of baking spice, vanilla and woodsmoke from the oak. On the palate there is plenty of juicy dark fruit, silky smooth tannins and a generous full body. A great wine to keep in the cellar for a few more years or enjoy now alongside hearty red meat dishes.
