Het aankoopproces en de productkeuze zijn goed, maar de bezorgservice met UPS is ellendig. Ik zal helaas niet meer kopen vanwege de bezorging door UPS die zich nooit aan datum/tijd houdt en een vals excuus geeft dat ze afwezig zijn terwijl ik er was en een vrije dag heb genomen om er te zijn.

    Kunstliefhebber en wijnliefhebber Donald Hess werd na een zakenreis naar Napa Valley in de jaren zeventig verliefd op de wijnbouw in de bergen. Na uitgebreid onderzoek naar de subregio Mount Veeder kocht hij hier in 1978 zo'n 900 hectare grond en vestigde hij wat een van de baanbrekende moderne wijnmakerijen van het gebied zou worden. Het unieke bergterroir staat centraal in alle wijnen van Hess en zorgt voor een mooi evenwicht tussen kracht en elegantie in zowel de rode als de witte wijnen.

    De leeuwentemmer is de bijnaam voor Malbec op het landgoed van Hess, omdat hun directeur Wijnmaken hem gebruikt om de krachtige tannines van rassen als Cabernet Sauvignon en Petite Sirah te verzachten. Deze blend brengt deze drie rassen in perfecte harmonie samen met Zinfandel en Merlot. Na de vinificatie rijpt de jonge wijn 22 maanden in Franse eikenhouten vaten voordat hij wordt gebotteld.

    Zwarte bessen en donkere pruimen domineren in de neus, samen met subtielere tonen van geroosterd eikenhout, kruiden en houtrook van de rijping in de vaten. De eerste slok onthult een robuuste volle body, stevige maar goed afgeronde tannines en een lange afdronk met rijk donker fruit. Het krachtige maar toegankelijke smaakprofiel maakt dit een geweldige wijn om nog een paar jaar in de kelder te leggen of om nu te drinken bij stevige rode vleesgerechten.
