Als iemand die al geruime tijd regelmatig wijn online bestelt (22 bestellingen en tientallen flessen sinds 2022), waardeer ik 8Wines al lang omdat het toegang biedt tot interessante internationale merken en exclusieve wijnen die lokaal niet altijd even gemakkelijk te vinden zijn. Het ware karakter van een platform komt echter niet naar voren als alles goed gaat; het wordt op de proef gesteld wanneer een dure fles beschadigd aankomt, en juist op dat punt schiet 8Wines opvallend tekort. De afgelopen jaren heb ik ruim € 3.500 bij 8Wines uitgegeven. Als je regelmatig op een platform koopt, verwacht je een basis van wederzijds vertrouwen, vooral bij de aankoop van premiumflessen waarbij de structurele integriteit van cruciaal belang is. Helaas heeft het bij twee verschillende gelegenheden aantreffen van beschadigde of gebrekkige flessen een star en klantvijandig reclamatiebeleid aan het licht gebracht. Een fles Susana Balbo Signature Malbec kwam volledig verhit en geoxideerd aan. Ondanks dat ik de structurele gebreken gedetailleerd had beschreven, schoof de klantenservice de verantwoordelijkheid van zich af, eiste onredelijk veel bewijsmateriaal en bood uiteindelijk beloningspunten aan in plaats van een correcte terugbetaling of vervanging. Een jaar later arriveerde er weer een fles, ditmaal een topwijn – de Caymus California Cabernet Sauvignon – die al in de doos lekte, met zichtbare vlekken onder de capsule. Bij het openen was het falen van de kurk onmiskenbaar, en vertoonde de wijn de kenmerkende, platte, overrijpe tonen van voortijdige oxidatie in plaats van het beoogde weelderige fruitprofiel. In plaats van dat kurkdefect en het lekken tijdens het transport te erkennen, ging het ondersteuningsteam van 8Wines over tot gaslighting. Ze probeerden een preek te houden over het „jamachtige profiel van de Wagner-familie“. Ze beweerden dat een lekkende, bevlekte fles met een droge kurk en voortijdige oxidatie normaal was. In plaats van achter de kwaliteit van hun hoogwaardige assortiment te staan, bood 8Wines een standaard afleidingsstrategie aan: geen schuld erkend, geen terugbetaling gegeven en een kleine toekenning van beloningspunten als zoethoudertje. Voor een trouwe klant die duizenden heeft uitgegeven op het platform, is een vergoeding in de vorm van virtuele punten voor een bedorven, dure wijn een teleurstellende oplossing. Eindoordeel 8Wines heeft een aantrekkelijke catalogus en een soepele verzendlogistiek – mits de flessen de reis onbeschadigd overleven. Maar als je hier de gok waagt om dure, premium flessen te kopen, wees je er dan van bewust dat je het volledige financiële risico draagt. Als een kurk niet goed zit of een fles tijdens het transport bedorven raakt, verwacht dan geen terugbetaling, maar een e-mail van het bedrijf waarin geprobeerd wordt je ervan te overtuigen dat bedorven wijn gewoon deel uitmaakt van de „stijl van de wijnmaker”, gevolgd door een handvol bonuspunten om de klacht af te sluiten – als je daarop aandringt, anders sta je met lege handen. In de toekomst zal ik mijn aankopen beperken tot alledaagse flessen met een lager risico, en eventuele hoogwaardige, premium investeringen uitsluitend kopen bij fysieke winkels waar visuele inspectie en onmiddellijke retourzendingen daadwerkelijk worden gehonoreerd.

As someone who has been ordering wine online regularly (22 orders and dozens of bottles since 2022), I have long appreciated 8Wines for offering access to interesting international labels and boutique styles that aren’t always readily available locally. However, a platform's true character isn't revealed when everything goes right; it's tested when a high-value bottle arrives compromised, and that is where 8Wines falls remarkably short. Over the last few years, I’ve spent well over €3,500 with 8Wines. When you spend consistently on a platform, you expect a baseline of mutual trust, especially when purchasing premium bottles where structural integrity is everything. Unfortunately, encountering damaged or flawed bottles on two separate occasions has brought to light a rigid, customer-unfriendly claims policy. A bottle of Susana Balbo Signature Malbec arrived completely cooked and oxidized. Despite detailing the structural defects, the customer service team deflected responsibility, demanded unreasonable layers of proof, and ultimately offered reward points rather than issuing a proper refund or replacement. One year later, another bottle, this time a high-end wine - the Caymus California Cabernet Sauvignon arrived leaking in the box with visible stain traces under the capsule. Upon opening, the cork failure was undeniable, and the wine showed the distinct, flat overcooked notes of premature oxidation rather than its intended opulent fruit profile. Instead of acknowledging that cork failure and transport leakage, the 8Wines’ support team engaged in gaslighting. They attempted to lecture about the "jammy profile of the Wagner family." They argued that a leaking, stained bottle with a dry cork and premature oxidation was normal. Rather than standing behind the quality of their high-end stock, 8Wines offered a standard deflection playbook: no blame accepted, no refund given, and a small allocation of reward points thrown in as an appeasement. For a loyal customer who has spent thousands on the platform, being compensated with virtual points for a cooked, expensive wine is a disappointing resolution. Final Verdict 8Wines has an attractive catalogue and smooth shipping logistics when bottles survive the trip intact. But if you gamble on buying expensive, premium bottles here, be aware that you carry all the financial risk. If a cork fails or a bottle cooks in transit, don't expect a refund, expect a corporate email trying to convince you that flawed wine is just part of the "winemaker's style," followed by a handful of reward points to close the ticket, that if you insist upon, otherwise you will be left empty handed. Moving forward, I will reserve my purchases for everyday, lower-risk bottles, and buy any high-end, premium investments strictly from physical storefronts where visual inspection and immediate returns are actually honored.
