A Birthday to Remember with DAOU & Colomé Celebrating my mother’s birthday was made even more special thanks to two incredible wines—DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 and Colomé Auténtico Malbec 2020. The star of the evening was undoubtedly the DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon. From the first sip, it enveloped us in its rich, velvety embrace. The deep dark fruit flavors, hints of cocoa, and perfectly balanced oak made every glass feel like a true indulgence. It was bold yet elegant, a wine that effortlessly brought warmth and joy to our gathering. Seeing my mother savor each sip with a smile made it all the more memorable. The Colomé Auténtico Malbec also delivered beautifully, with its pure expression of high-altitude Malbec. It was powerful, with ripe blackberries, spice, and a smooth, lingering finish—an excellent complement to the evening. These wines didn’t just enhance our meal; they became part of the celebration, elevating every toast and conversation. A heartfelt thank you to DAOU and Colomé for making this special occasion truly unforgettable!

    De Noorse ondernemer Alexander Vik richtte in 2004 zijn gelijknamige wijnhuis op om zijn droom te verwezenlijken om wijn van wereldklasse te maken in de Chileense Millahue Valley. Om zijn visie te verwezenlijken werkte Vik samen met topwijnmakers en druiventelers, waaronder Patrick Valette, die zijn tanden zette in het maken van wijn in Napa Valley en in enkele van de belangrijkste chateaux van Bordeaux. Vandaag heeft het domein ongeveer 900 hectare wijngaarden, waarvan het beste fruit wordt gebruikt voor hun eigen bottelingen en de rest wordt verkocht aan andere wijnhuizen.

    Milla Cala is een prachtige Bordeaux blend samengesteld uit Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Merlot en Syrah. De wijn ontleent zijn naam aan de Millahue of "Place of Gold" vallei waar de druiven vandaan komen. De opbrengsten worden zeer laag gehouden om de kwaliteit te maximaliseren, en in de wijnmakerij rijpt de jonge wijn 21 maanden in Franse eiken vaten. Daarna wordt de wijn gebotteld en rijpt hij nog eens drie jaar voordat hij klaar is om te worden vrijgegeven.

    Weelderige cassis, bramen en kersen kenmerken de neus, terwijl de eerste slok een stevige volle body, soepele tannines en een goed gebouwde structuur onthult. In de mond blijven hints van zwarte bessen, gedroogde kruiden en kruiden uit de sigarendoos hangen, waardoor deze wijn uitstekend past bij rode vleesgerechten.

    Norwegian entrepreneur Alexander Vik founded his namesake winery in 2004 to realise his dream of making world-class wine in Chile’s Millahue Valley. Milla Cala is a stunning Bordeaux blend composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Merlot, and Syrah. The wine takes its name from the Millahue or “Place of Gold” Valley where the grapes are sourced. Luscious cassis, blackberries and cherries characterise the nose while the first sip reveals a bold full body, smooth tannins and a well-built structure.
