    Shafer Vineyards is opgericht door John Shafer die een carrière in de uitgeverij achter zich liet om in 1972 naar Napa te verhuizen en zijn liefde voor het wijnmaken na te jagen. John produceerde zijn eerste wijn van het wijnjaar 1978 en in 1983 werd hij vergezeld door zijn zoon Doug in het nieuwe familiebedrijf. Deze iconische Shafer botteling viert de bijzondere 30-jarige werkrelatie tussen vader en zoon, die wordt samengevat als "anderhalve generatie" of "één punt vijf".

    De druiven voor deze speciale wijn zijn afkomstig van twee uitzonderlijke wijngaarden op heuvels in het Stags Leap District. De druiven worden laat en optimaal rijp geoogst en zorgvuldig gesorteerd, zodat alleen het beste fruit in deze botteling wordt verwerkt. De jonge wijn rijpt 20 maanden in nieuwe Franse eiken vaten om de componenten van de blend te harmoniseren en extra complexiteit toe te voegen.

    De neus opent met betoverende hints van geplette bessen, lavendel, bakkruiden en een steenachtige mineraliteit. In de mond is er een weelderige, romige textuur met stevige tannines en een goed gebouwde structuur die goed zal reageren op een langere kelder. De afdronk is lang en elegant met toetsen van zwarte thee, cassis en donkere chocolade.
