A Birthday to Remember with DAOU & Colomé Celebrating my mother’s birthday was made even more special thanks to two incredible wines—DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 and Colomé Auténtico Malbec 2020. The star of the evening was undoubtedly the DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon. From the first sip, it enveloped us in its rich, velvety embrace. The deep dark fruit flavors, hints of cocoa, and perfectly balanced oak made every glass feel like a true indulgence. It was bold yet elegant, a wine that effortlessly brought warmth and joy to our gathering. Seeing my mother savor each sip with a smile made it all the more memorable. The Colomé Auténtico Malbec also delivered beautifully, with its pure expression of high-altitude Malbec. It was powerful, with ripe blackberries, spice, and a smooth, lingering finish—an excellent complement to the evening. These wines didn’t just enhance our meal; they became part of the celebration, elevating every toast and conversation. A heartfelt thank you to DAOU and Colomé for making this special occasion truly unforgettable!

    Rafael Palacios is de broer van Alvaro Palacios, een van de beroemdste wijnmakers van Spanje, en het is duidelijk dat hij het immense talent van Alvaro deelt. Rafael bedrijft zijn magie in de noordwestelijke hoek van Valdeorras in Spanje, niet ver van de Portugese grens. De omstandigheden zijn hier perfect voor de Godello druif: Rafaels wijnstokken staan aangeplant op steile terrassen die kleine hoeveelheden intens smakend fruit opleveren. In totaal heeft hij zo'n 20 percelen verspreid over de regio, waaronder enkele wijnstokken van wel 100 jaar oud.

    As Sortes is Rafaels paradepaardje en wordt gemaakt van oude Godello wijnstokken van 40-96 jaar oud. De most wordt vergist met natuurlijk voorkomende gisten in Franse eiken vaten van 500 liter en de jonge wijn wordt vervolgens zes maanden op de droesem bewaard om een romige textuur en extra complexiteit toe te voegen.

    Het resultaat is een nauwkeurig uitgebalanceerde wijn met een rijke, volle body, een soepel mondgevoel en intense smaken van steenfruit met hints van geroosterde amandelen en walnoten. Deze meesterlijke Godello is krachtig en toch elegant en is een geweldige partner voor romige vis- of kipgerechten en kan ook geserveerd worden bij risotto's, pasta carbonara of varkenskarbonades. Hij zal de komende tien jaar verder rijpen en zich verder ontwikkelen.
