Ik vind de beoordelingen van wijnen erg handig; ze helpen enorm bij het kiezen van een wijn! Bij mijn laatste aankoop van meer dan 400 euro raakte ik in de war door de wijn- en verzendkosten in mijn winkelmandje: de wijnprijs werd zonder btw weergegeven, maar er stonden wel verzendkosten bij die niet nul waren, zoals beloofd. Bij het afrekenen leek het ineens anders: er waren geen verzendkosten, maar wel btw. Een beetje misleidend.

Het familiebedrijf J. Lohr Estates werd in de jaren 1970 opgericht door Jerry Lohr, die nu samenwerkt met zijn drie kinderen Steve, Cynthia en Lawrence. Dit pioniersbedrijf op het gebied van duurzaamheid is ook een van de leiders van de Californische wijnbouw. De landgoedwijngaarden beslaan meer dan 4.000 hectare in de Arroyo Seco en Santa Lucia Highlands van Monterey, Paso Robles en St. Helena in Napa Valley.

De wijn wordt gemaakt van een blend van voornamelijk Cabernet Sauvignon, met kleine toevoegingen van Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc en Syrah die consistentie geven aan deze gemakkelijk te benaderen wijn. De druiven komen van J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks wijngaard en twee nieuwe locaties net ten noorden, J. Lohr Sinclair en J. Lohr Jones Ranches. De verschillende grondsoorten dragen bij aan de gelaagde complexiteit van de wijn. De uiteindelijke wijn rijpt 12 maanden in 60-gallon Missouri en Minnesota eiken vaten.

Deze sappige Cabernet Sauvignon is een dichte wijn met rijpe aroma's van zwarte kersen en bessen, gevolgd door tonen van hazelnoot en vanille. In de mond toont hij zachte tannines en een goede structuur. Er is een goede concentratie van fruit, vooral rijpe kersen en op de afdronk zijn er licht kruidige tonen van kaneel en nootmuskaat. Probeer hem eens bij pulled pork, lasagne bolognese en fettuccine met vleessaus.
