Owned by Gabriella Burlotto and Franco Bianco, the Castello di Verduno estate is based around the charming 16th century castle in the village of Verduno right by the Barolo wine region. As well as top quality Barolos and Barbarescos, the winery also produces limited quantities of stunning Langhe Nebbiolo. The grapes are sourced from the estate’s 0.89 hectare Nebbiolo vineyard and are harvested by hand and farmed organically.
Following the harvest the grapes are carefully sorted and fermented in stainless steel tanks. Then the wine is transferred to large Slavonian oak botti where it matures for 6 months. The finished wine is bottled without filtration and allowed to rest in the bottle for three months before release.
The result is a lively red that opens with classic Nebbiolo aromas of red cherries, violets and roses. On the palate there is a vibrant acidity to provide balance to the ripe red fruit character and sweet baking spice hints from the oak ageing. This is a very easy to drink wine with smooth tannins and a rich texture that would pair well with a herby roasted chicken or pork chops.

Over het algemeen was mijn ervaring positief; ze hebben een breed assortiment aan wijnen, waarvan sommige nergens anders te vinden zijn – de belangrijkste reden waarom ik nog steeds bij hen koop. Bovendien zijn de kortingen redelijk en worden ze vaak aangeboden, maar... hun kortingscodes voor de eerste aanbieding werken alleen bij die eerste aanbieding, wat op zich prima is, maar waarom sturen ze me dan in elk pakket dat ik bestel zo’n kortingsbon, waarom spammen ze me via e-mail en elke keer als ik inlog op de website? Dit stoort me echt... Daarnaast is hun spaarpuntensysteem nutteloos. Ten eerste krijg je maar een schijntje, zelfs als je € 250 aan een bestelling uitgeeft, maar zelfs dat schijntje vervalt als je niet snel weer bestelt, wat op zijn zachtst gezegd oneerlijk is... en tot slot: als je een wijn met kurksmaak krijgt, een wijn met een ander defect of een wijn die gelekt heeft (mijn laatste bestelling bevatte een fles Caymus Cabernet van $100 met een lekkende kurk, waardoor de wijn gekookt en plat smaakte), dan hebben ze geen enkele procedure om de wijn te vervangen of terug te sturen, of om een terugbetaling of vervanging te krijgen – helemaal niets, wat een grote no-no-no is voor elke wijnverzamelaar...
