UPS was verschrikkelijk. Eerst gaven ze de verwachte bezorgdatum door, en daarna lieten ze mijn vrouw de hele dag wachten om uiteindelijk zonder enige waarschuwing (!) niet te bezorgen. Pas de volgende ochtend lieten ze weten dat de verwachte bezorgdatum was gewijzigd (!) en deze keer lukte het wel. Een hele dag verspild, geen mogelijkheid om de koerier te bellen. Vreselijke ervaring! Arrogante klootzakken.

Drink hem nu of bewaar hem tot 20 jaar. Het wordt aanbevolen om de wijn een half uur te decanteren.

Gelegen in Torano Nuovo, in de provincie Teramo, werd het wijnhuis Emidio Pepe opgericht in 1964 en is nu een van de meest gerenommeerde wijnproducenten in Abruzzo. Vanaf het begin besloot het bedrijf het gebruik van chemische producten in de wijngaard af te schaffen en natuurlijke meststoffen te gebruiken en sinds 1998 is het biologisch gecertificeerd. In 2008 kwam daar de biodynamische certificering bij.

De wijn wordt gemaakt met Montepulciano druiven van wijngaarden die ongeveer 30 jaar oud zijn en geplant op kleigrond. Na spontane gisting met inheemse gisten in met glas beklede cementen tanks rust de wijn 24 maanden in dezelfde tanks voordat hij zonder filtratie wordt gebotteld.

In het glas onthult de Montepulciano d'Abruzzo van Emidio Pepe een intense kleur met robijnrode tinten. Het aromatische profiel is rijk en geurig met tonen van rood fruit en kruiden en aardse hints op de achtergrond. In de mond is hij krachtig, zacht en evenwichtig. Hij heeft fluweelzachte tannines, een volle body en een aangename minerale adering. De afdronk is lang en fruitig. Het is een wijn van grote klasse, met een uitstekend bewaarpotentieel. Laat hem een paar jaar in de kelder staan of geniet er nu van bij gegrild rood vlees, lasagne bolognese of rijpe kazen.
